Title: Analysis and Design of Ultra-Wide-Band Radio Receiver Front-end for Versatile Communication Systems
This thesis presents the analysis and design of an ultra-wide-band (UWB) radio receiver front-end intended for versatile communication systems, such as software-defined radios (SDRs). The receiver operates across a broad frequency range from 1GHz to 12GHz, utilising an integrated architecture that includes a wide-band low-noise amplifier (LNA) for the 1-6GHz range, a tunable narrow-band LNA for the 6-12GHz range, and a passive mixer based down-converter. To ensure a wide-band match on a single input, an on-chip matching network is employed, providing seamless switching between the LNAs while maintaining input matching and low noise figure.
Measurement results indicate that the receiver achieves a DSB noise figure of 7 dB, input matching (S11) better than -10 dB, and linearity with an input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) above -15 dBm. The proposed receiver architecture offers a flexible solution for current and future communication systems, supporting the development of 5G and future wireless standards.
